About the fake windows update
The percentage climbs slowly, pauses at the numbers real updates pause at, and never reaches the end. Put it fullscreen on a colleague’s machine and the effect is immediate, because everyone has waited on this screen before.
How to use it
- Press the fullscreen button so the browser interface is completely hidden.
- Walk away. The counter advances on its own and stalls convincingly.
- Press Escape to exit — the keystroke is caught before anything else sees it.
Questions
Will this change anything on the computer?
No. It is a web page drawing a picture of an update. Nothing is installed, downloaded or modified.
How do I get out of it?
Press Escape. If the browser is in fullscreen, Escape exits fullscreen first, so press it twice.
Does it work on a Mac?
Yes, any browser renders it. There is a macOS-styled version too if you want the prank to match the machine.
Does this cost anything or need an account?
No. Every tool on the site is free, needs no sign-up, and works immediately in the browser with nothing to install.
Will my screen stay awake while it runs?
Turn on Keep awake and the browser holds a wake lock, which keeps the display on with no input until you leave the page.
Put this on your site
The embeddable version drops the page around it and runs the tool on its own.
