About the matrix rain
Columns of characters fall at different speeds with a bright leading glyph and a fading tail, drawn on canvas so it stays smooth at full screen. It makes an excellent second-monitor screensaver and an even better background for a video call you would rather not be on camera for.
How to use it
- Go fullscreen and leave it running.
- Works on any size display — the columns re-flow when the window changes.
- Press Escape to exit.
Questions
Does this use a lot of battery?
It is a canvas animation, so it uses more power than a static screen. On a laptop running unplugged, a solid colour screen is kinder.
Can I use it as a video background?
Yes. Screen-record it or share the tab in a call.
What are the characters?
A mix of katakana and latin glyphs, chosen at random per cell and re-rolled as they fall.
Does this cost anything or need an account?
No. Every tool on the site is free, needs no sign-up, and works immediately in the browser with nothing to install.
Will my screen stay awake while it runs?
Turn on Keep awake and the browser holds a wake lock, which keeps the display on with no input until you leave the page.
